Getting here

Please, please, please see our advice below about problems with SatNav. Getting here is easy if you follow these directions.

  • If Coming On The A1

Turn off at Dishforth onto A168 (J49) towards Thirsk >> After 9 miles leave the A168 (signed A170 and A19 York) >> At roundabout take the A19 south towards York.

  • Alternatively If Coming From York

Take the A19 North Towards Thirsk (Travel About 15 Miles.

  • THEN

About 3 Miles South of Thirsk, Turn Off The A19 for Coxwold (Brown Sign For Byland Abbey) >> After 5 miles, in Coxwold Village turn left for Byland Abbey (Do Not Take The Road Just Before Coxwold, Signposted Kilburn and Oldstead). >> At The Old Ruins of Byland Abbey, Turn Left For Oldstead. >> After One Mile On Entering The Village Of Oldstead The Black Swan Is On The Left.

  • IF COMING ON A170 FROM THE EAST COAST

Follow Signs For Wass (3 Miles SW of Helmsley). >> After 2 miles in Wass Village Keep Straight ahead of Byland Abbey. >> At the old ruins of Byland Abbey turn right for Oldstead. >> After one mile on entering the village of Oldstead The Black Swan Is On The Left.

  • DO NOT APPROACH FROM THIRSK VIA THE A170
  • 3 COMMON SATNAV NEED TO KNOWS

    1. The Black Swan is at the SE end of Oldstead on the junction towards Byland Abbey. The postcode YO61 4BL covers most of Oldstead and gives a destination in the very centre of the village about 200 metres away.

    2. If you approach from Kilburn towards Oldstead, some systems announce thta you have arrived when you are still over a mile away (the destination appears to be in the middle of a forest). The solution is to carry on straight ahead passing through Oldstead to The Black Swan at the far end of the village.

    3. Systems set to use the nearest main road will approach from Thirsk via the A170 and lead you to climb up Sutton Bank only to almost immediately descend back down White Horse Bank. This takes considerably longer than our directions above as it involves very steep and narrow roads and is definitely not recommended in the Winter Months.
